This practice is sometimes misunderstood by palliative care clinicians, who tend not to see the many patients who routinely benefit from this “palliative intent” chemotherapy, instead being called to evaluate those who are admitted to the hospital with complications or who are generally faring poorly.
The aim of this study was to measure the use of PRT for women who have died of breast cancer in the Canadian province of Alberta, and to identify factors that might affect this use. The aim of this study was to assess real‐world treatment patterns and their effectiveness during palliative therapy of metastatic breast cancer. The objective was to understand when and how chemotherapy‐only treatment is used in metastatic breast cancer and whether comparative effectiveness analysis supports the observed patterns of care. Women with metastatic breast cancer often receive many lines of palliative chemotherapy, which might be beneficial but also harmful. Still, little is known about the patients' perception of the patient-doctor communication regarding late lines of noncurative treatment.

Chemotherapy for these stages of breast cancer is generally given as a combination of several drugs because research shows that giving them together is more effective than giving each drug alone. In the Netherlands, approximately 1300 women aged ≥75 years die every year of metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Data on palliative chemotherapy (CT) in very elderly patients are rare, and prospective studies appeared cumbersome. Therefore, we retrospectively analyzed the outcome and feasibility of chemotherapy in elderly MBC patients. Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most morbid and lethal of malignancies with more than 80% of cases continuing to be diagnosed at an advanced stage, which precludes a curative treatment option. Carcinomas contribute more than 95% of cases for which palliative systemic chemotherapy is the mainstay of management of advanced cases following optimal supportive care measures.
